Good pizza for a price.

When this first opened I was excited to have a local brick over pizza place.  But like many people, we were surprised to drop in at dinner a few years back and find no pizza and a menu of pricey Italian entrees.

This week, me and the work crew were headed to our favorite thai spot across the street, Sweet Basil.  If you haven’t been, you have to go!  It is one of my favorite places in town. Fortunately for Coal Fired, our party was too big to be seated at Sweet basil so we headed over to Coal Fired “Bistro” — I don’t speak great European, but I am pretty sure “bistro” means small and pricey.

As we walked in, I was asked about their pizza and quickly said, “They don’t do pizza any more, its fancier than that.”

And then I had to eat my words, and their pizza.

I was pleasantly suprised to see three pizzas back on the menu: a margarita, a meatlovers, and a mushroom. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to broaden my horizons a little and order new stuff, the other is to eat healthier (and believe it or not, eat less pizza). So I threw resolution #2 out the window, and ordered the Meat Me in the Middle. I typically avoid the heavy, meat loaded pies but thought this one was pretty good sounding.

I had the 12 inch with pepperoni, prosciutto, pancetta, roasted garlic, and mozzarella for $15. My friends at WebSiteBiz, a great SEO marketing firm in Charlotte, NC picked up the tab so I really shouldn’t complain about the price.

It was not pretty, a very good sign for an expensive lunch spot.  My first bite was great.  It tasted very fresh and right out of the brick oven. It had a flavorful cheese and sauce combination with a thin and crispy crust. The salty taste pulled from the proscuitto, pepporoni and pancetta complemented the rest of the pie and did not over power it at all. Overall, it was delicious and I highly recommed it.

The rest of my party was all very complimentary of their lunches as well, accept the ravioli my friend ordered was samller than an appetizer but he said it was delicious.

I like being surprised to find another good pie, and I recommend you give Coal Fired Bistro a try.

Tony’s Bada Bing: A pizzeria with a drive thru!

by Jami Mullikin on December 11, 2012

Pepperoni Pizza the way I like it.

Don’t let the small, drive-thru appearance fool you. The former Sexy Taco, Tony’s Bada Bing Bronx, New York Pizzeria was a great surprise for me this week.  A co-worker told me that they had seen a new place open up on Woodruff Road in Greenville (it may actually be Mauldin, SC), so I set out to check it out and was pleasantly surprized.

Upon arrival, I was unsure of what my expectations should be.  I love small, hole-in-the-wall places, but this is in a stand alone drive through that was originally a Brewsters I believe. When I walked in, I was surprised to see a few tables.  My first question to the lady taking my order was, “Are you Tony the local pizza chain, Tony’s from Haywood Road or a new Tony?”.  To my surprise, we have a new Tony in town.

So I ordered my two slices of pepperoni and they came out quick.  The slices are huge with a thin crust with just the right amount crispiness.  It is exactly what you would expect from a NY-style pizzeria. They are light on the cheese with a good balance of sauce. Nothing fancy, just good and quick.

I think BadaBing is definitely worth checking out and a place that I will stop back by when I am on that side of town.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Downtown Greenville has a new slice, Vic’s NY Style Pizza.

July 1, 2012

A little taste of Brooklyn right here in Greenville, SC. I love it when a new pizza place opens. Especially when you can tell the owners have a passion for great pizza. It’s obvious that Vic has been throwing dough before he opened here in June of 2012. That is the vibe at Vic’s NY-style […]

DellaVentura’s pizza in Greer is worth the wait.

March 4, 2012

Dellaventura’s is a true dough-throwing pizzeria masked behind the facade of an Italian eatery. I draw the live by pizza by the slice. If a restaurant serves pizza only in the round, I say that is an Italian restaurant. If they sell it by the slice, I call it a pizzeria. I was pleased to […]

Torrelli’s Pizzeria offers the Biggest Slices in Town.

January 8, 2012

No doubt, Torrelli’s NY-Style pizza has the biggest slices in town. I had heard a lot about the Torrelli’s out near Furman University so I was excited to see that they opened one on Wade Hampton (but they since have closed it already) – oddly enough within a stones throw of Tito’s and Pizza City. […]
